Port of Algeciras Handbook

A reference record of the Bay of Algeciras port complex — its strategic geography, terminal infrastructure, maritime services, intermodal connections, and operational performance during the 2010 calendar year.

The Port of Algeciras Handbook enters its 2011 edition as the busiest port in Spain by total tonnage and the leading container facility in the Mediterranean basin. The figures recorded here — 70 million tonnes of cargo throughput, 2.8 million container TEUs, and approximately six million ferry passengers across the Strait of Gibraltar in calendar year 2010 — describe a complex that has, within four decades, transformed from a regional Spanish harbour into a primary transshipment hub for east-west shipping between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

This Handbook is organised in ten sections. The first establishes the strategic geography that defines the port's commercial role; subsequent sections document the physical infrastructure of its basins and terminals, the cargo categories handled, the maritime services offered to calling vessels, and the regulatory framework under which the port operates. A dedicated statistical annex preserves the headline operating figures for 2010, and a directory section records the principal terminal operators, service providers, and the Port Authority (APBA) as constituted at the time of publication.

Reference data have been retained as originally reported. Where current information would materially differ from the 2011 record — for example, in container terminal capacity or in the operator identity of TTI Algeciras — an editorial note marked [Ed. 2026] appears in the relevant section. The 2011 record itself is otherwise preserved as published.

On the preservation of this Handbook

The Port of Algeciras Handbook 2011 was first published as an interactive digital flipbook in Adobe Flash format, the prevailing standard for industry publications in the period 2009 — 2013. With the discontinuation of Flash by Adobe in December 2020, the original interactive edition is no longer rendered by modern browsers. The present web edition reconstructs the Handbook's documentary content in standard HTML, preserving its structure, statistical references, and editorial framing.

Citations to this Handbook — including the entry in the English-language Wikipedia article on the Port of Algeciras, which references the 2011 edition for the port's 2010 throughput figures — continue to resolve to this URL. Sectional anchors have been preserved where possible to support deep-linking.

Readers seeking current statistical data for the Port of Algeciras should consult the annual reports published by the Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras (APBA) and the periodic rankings issued by Lloyd's List, the World Shipping Council, and Puertos del Estado.
